The Ground Shook

We had an earthquake yesterday. It was really something to experience. Where I live, it is super rare and shouldn’t happen.

I watched as my Colors talk about it as norms. Downplaying it or overexagerating it. But always, it only was something that happened within the series of cause and effects they call their own lives. Generally speaking, this earthquake caused almost no trouble or excitement toward anyone because it was very light. If anything, it was kinda cool.

To me….man I really have to chill with these YouTube videos that talk about horror and scifi books because “The Three Body Problem” really scares the shit out of me. The channel is called Quinns Ideas www.youtube.com/@QuinnsIdeas and he talks about the novels he has read. I strongly suggest his channel. The amount of work that must go into creating the content….The writing, the video editing, voiceover, the whole thing makes me so envious because i struggle just with the writing part. He really can explain a book’s concepts so well that sometimes its better then the book itself. I learned about the book by Liu Cixin from this channel before it aired on Netflix. Just like I did with Game of Thrones, so enamored with the story, i had to find out what happens and already spoiled it before it was able to be adapted. Of course, i could have just read the books too but…you know, lazy.

Without going into the plot or even talking about the book itself, I just have to say how crazy life is on earth and how uncaringly cold the universe is. We have yet to confirm any life in the cosmos, let alone (what we call) intelligent life. But aliens is one thing. Our planet has had centuries of temperate and non hostile environments that allowed us to get to this point in our civilization.

But an event will happen with 100 % certainty in the future. So many things can just obliterate an entire continent. And here we are laughing at a potential omen of a earth breaking quake, one that could tear through cities like paper.

I guess the point I am making is our civilization is so delicate. Nothing of significance has happened in thousands or tens of thousands of years. Maybe even longer. But at any moment, the laws of science dictate, that this delicate precious little civilization will be hit by a massive event. If not one event, ten or twenty. Will humanity survive? Maybe the first time.

But entropy means, no matter what, any delicate balanced system will decay and crumble given enough time. I just wonder if the next earthquake is not a small tremor but a shrieking piece of space smashing into the earth thousands of miles away while we wait for it to catch up and disintegrate us
